Red Dunes Desert Safari Dubai — the classic Lahbab experience

The photos you've seen of Dubai's desert are almost all from Lahbab — the red-dune belt 60 km south-east of the city. Here's how to see it properly.

Why the Lahbab dunes are red

The Lahbab desert sits on iron-rich sand blown in from Saudi Arabia and Oman over thousands of years. The iron oxide gives the dunes their deep terracotta colour, which turns almost fluorescent for the last 40 minutes before sunset — the reason every evening desert safari heads straight there.

What a red-dune safari includes

Pickup from your hotel in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser at around 15:00 in winter, 15:30 in summer. Roughly 45 minutes' drive to the edge of the dunes, then tyre pressures are dropped and the dune bashing session begins — about 25 minutes of high-crested runs, ridge drives and controlled descents.

Golden-hour stop for photos and sandboarding, then on to the Bedouin camp for a camel ride, henna, shisha, unlimited BBQ dinner and live tanoura, belly dance and fire shows. You're back at your hotel around 21:30.

Red dunes vs. desert conservation reserve

If you want adrenaline, photos and the classic 'orange sand under a Land Cruiser' shot — book a Lahbab red-dune safari. If you want wildlife, oryx, gazelle and quiet drives instead of dune bashing, that's the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve — a different, slower experience.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the red dunes in Dubai?

The famous 'red dunes' are in the Lahbab desert, roughly 60 km south-east of Dubai. The colour comes from iron oxide in the sand and is strongest at sunrise and sunset.

How long does it take to drive from Dubai to the red dunes?

Around 45–60 minutes from Downtown, JBR or Palm Jumeirah with our included 4x4 hotel pickup.

What's the difference between red dunes and desert conservation reserve?

The red dunes (Lahbab) are open, high-crested sand ideal for dune bashing and buggies. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) is a protected area used for eco tours and wildlife drives — lower dunes, no off-road bashing.

Is the red dune safari suitable for kids?

Yes. Children 3+ can join the standard tour; anyone under 3 rides seated on a parent's lap. Ask for the gentler-drive option at booking if you have young children.

When are the red dunes most photogenic?

About 40 minutes before sunset for the classic golden-red glow. Sunrise tours also catch the colour, with fewer people in the frame.
