First Desert Safari in Dubai: what to expect from pickup to dropoff
A minute-by-minute walkthrough of a Dubai desert safari — for first-timers who want to know exactly what's coming.

First-timer nerves are normal. The good news is that a Dubai desert safari is one of the most polished tourist experiences in the world, and if you follow along below you'll know exactly what's coming.
15:00 — hotel pickup
A Toyota Land Cruiser pulls up at your hotel with your name on it. The driver introduces himself, loads any small bags into the back and confirms your booking on his tablet. Up to 6 guests per vehicle on the shared tour.
15:45 — arrival at the dunes
We stop at a viewpoint on the edge of the Lahbab desert. The driver deflates the tyres from 32 psi to about 15 psi (this is why dune bashing works). Bathroom stop and a bottle of water for anyone who forgot.
16:00 — dune bashing (25 minutes)
The main event. Seatbelts on. The 4x4 climbs and descends dune faces, slides sideways down soft slopes and generally throws you around in a controlled way. If you're nervous, shout 'easy please' — the driver will dial it down. If you love it, ask for 'the full one.'
16:30 — sunset stop
10 minutes on a high dune for photos, sandboarding for anyone who wants to try, and a few group shots on the Land Cruiser. Golden hour lasts about 20 minutes; the last 5 are the best.
17:15 — arrival at the Bedouin camp
Welcome coffee (gahwa) and dates. Free henna, shisha corner, and a short camel ride. If you want to try Emirati costume for photos it's included.
18:30 — dinner starts
Unlimited BBQ buffet — grilled meats, mezze, vegetarian dishes, rice, salads, dessert. Vegan and gluten-free plates on request. Cash bar for alcohol.
19:15–20:30 — the shows
Tanoura first (spinning skirt with LEDs), then belly dance, then fire show as the finale. Between shows the DJ plays. Nobody is dragged on stage; you can sit and eat throughout.
20:45 — return to your hotel
Back in the 4x4 for a quiet drive. Tyres re-inflated at the highway edge. Most guests are dropped at their hotel by 21:30.
What to bring
- Sunglasses and a light jacket for after sunset
- Phone with charged battery (photo opportunities are constant)
- Closed shoes you don't mind getting sandy
- Some cash for optional extras and tips
