Hidden costs of a Dubai desert safari — and how to avoid them

The upsells, tips and camp add-ons nobody warns you about — and which ones are actually worth paying for.

Hidden costs of a Dubai desert safari — and how to avoid them

An AED 30 evening safari is a real price, not a lie. But there are things at the camp that cost extra, and knowing which is worth paying and which is a soft trap will save you AED 100–300 across the evening.

Alcohol at the camp

Cash bar. Beer AED 25–30, wine AED 35–40, spirits AED 40+. Not included in any package. If you don't drink, no cost. If you do, budget accordingly — it's competitive with Dubai hotel bars.

Quad bikes and dune buggies

30 minutes on a quad: AED 150. Dune buggy: AED 450+. Both are legitimate extras with real fixed costs (fuel, maintenance, instructor). If you want to try one, buy it in advance on WhatsApp — same-day upsells at the camp are 20–30% more.

Falcon photos

A trained falcon on a leather glove, AED 20 per person. Genuine and worth it if you've never held one.

Costume and henna

Both free at reputable camps. If you're being charged extra for basic henna or trying on Emirati costume, you're at a cheap camp that's cutting the standard package.

Photos and video

Professional photo packages AED 100–300. Skip unless it's a special occasion — phones are more than good enough for social.

Driver tips

Optional but appreciated: AED 10–20 per person is standard for a good driver, AED 30+ if he really tailored the ride for you.

How to stop surprise costs

  • Get the full inclusion list in writing on WhatsApp before paying
  • Ask 'what is not included?' before booking
  • Set a cash budget for the camp bar and stick to it
  • Prebook any add-ons — same-day is always more expensive
